Dial Plan Customization

Updated at December 2nd, 2024

On initial set-up, Microsoft Teams uses a dial plan for every caller that defaults to sending all dialled numbers in E.164 format (with "+ country code," i.e., "+1" for the US or Canada, "+44" for the UK, etc.). This means extension dialling does not work (+11234 does not work on most PBX) until Microsoft Teams Connector adds a custom Dial Plan Normalization rule to each enterprise to compensate. Some PBX types are not compatible with the default rule.

Alternatively, a reseller can create a 'branded Dial Plan' automatically applied to each newly created enterprise ("Add Enterprise"). If a Branded Dial Plan is not created, the newly created Enterprise will (as it does already) default to the Microsoft Teams Connector custom Dial Plan described above.

This setting allows each Reseller to:

  • Brand the name of the Dial Plan Normalization rule.
  • Modify the Dial Plan Normalization rule to adjust for a unique or consistently different PBX requirement (i.e. strip and/or add digits).

NOTE: This branding must be done while viewing the Microsoft Teams Connector portal at the Reseller level

From the Reseller level dashboard, select "Dial Plan."

DialPlan Policy Name: This will appear in the Teams Admin Center under Branding as the Dial Plan item, as in the figure below. Microsoft defaults to using Global.

DialPlan Normalization Rule Name: This rule name will be created under the DialPlan Policy in the Microsoft Admin Center, as in the figure at the bottom of this article.

DialPlan Normalization Pattern: DO NOT modify this unless you know Microsoft's Dial Plans and regular expressions. Please open a ticket with Microsoft Teams Connector, provide the details of your PBX's standard and desired behaviour, and wait for guidance. The SLA for the first response is one business day.

Test: Input an example number here and click "test" to ensure the new Normalization Pattern is valid. Once this is done successfully, the "Save Settings" button will be clickable. Click it.

The rule you created will appear in the Teams Admin Center underneath the "Dial Plans" menu.

See the Dial Plan Normalization Rule Details article for more information.
